ALDIS, Harry Gidney (1863-1919)

Prior to his first library appointment he had been apprenticed to a printer and was then employed for three years by an Edinburgh publisher. He became an eminent bibliographer and authority on the history of printing. Notable among his publications are A list of books printed in Scotland before 1700 (1904) and the small standard work The printed book (1916, revised edition by John Carter and Brooke Crutchley, 1947).
